About Golghar Patna

Gol Ghar (Round house) is located at Patna , Bihar at the west of Gandhi maidan . It was built in 1786 by the order of then Governor General Warren Hasting.
The reason for its construction was, there was a devastating famine in 1770 which took lives of 10,000 persons in the region of Bihar, Bengal and Bangladesh, so by the order of Governor General Gol ghar was constructed as a storage house for the British Army.
The architect of its construction was Captain John Garstin, an engineer in East India Company.
It was completed on 20th July 1786.


The building has a foundation of 125m and height of 29m. A person can climb at the top of the buildings through 145 steps and is totally pillarless.

From the top of the Gol Ghar we can get an awesome view of Patna and holy river Ganga. At the time of construction it was the tallest building of Patna.
